One art

The art of losing isn’t hard to master;
so many things seem filled with the intent
to be lost that their loss is no disaster.

Lose something every day. Accept the fluster
of lost door keys, the hour badly spent.
The art of losing isn’t hard to master.

Then practice losing farther, losing faster:
places, and names, and where it was you meant
to travel. None of these will bring disaster.

I lost my mother’s watch. And look! my last, or
next-to-last, of three loved houses went.
The art of losing isn’t hard to master.

I lost two cities, lovely ones. And, vaster,
some realms I owned, two rivers, a continent.
I miss them, but it wasn’t a disaster.

—Even losing you (the joking voice, a gesture
I love) I shan’t have lied. It’s evident
the art of losing’s not too hard to master
though it may look like (Write it!) like disaster.

"Dietro di noi la notte schiude
i suoi fiori carnivori. Sabbia di sole
ci sbatte e ci sospinge verso il muto
traguardo del delitto."

Atrás de nós a noite descerra
suas flores carnívoras. Areia de sol
nos sacode nos incita rumo à muda
meta do delito.

pintar as unhas, descobrir a nuca,
piscar os olhos, beber.
Tomo o nome de Deus num vão.
Descobri que a seu tempo
vão me chorar e esquecer.

How to be alone

If you are, at first, lonely - be patient.
If you've not been alone much or if, when you were, you weren't okay with it then just wait,
you'll find it's fine to be alone...
once you're embracing it.

We could start with the acceptable places: the bathroom, the coffee shop, the library.
Where you can stall and read the paper,
where you can get your caffeine fix and sit and stay there,

where you can browse the stacks and smell the books
you're not supposed to talk much anyway,
so it's safe there.

There's also the gym.
If you're shy you can hang out with yourself in the mirrors, you can put headphones in.
And there's public transportation
- because we all gotta go places -
and there's prayer and meditation
no one will think less if you're hanging out with your breath
seeking peace and salvation.

Start simple,
things you may have previously avoided based on your avoid-being-alone principles.
The lunch counter, where you will be surrounded by chow-downers,
employees that only have an hour
and their spouses work across town
and so they, like you, will be alone.
Resist the urge to hang out with your cell phone.

When you are comfortable with eat-lunch-and-run, take yourself out for dinner,
a restaurant with linen and silverware.
You're no less intriguing a person when you're eating solo dessert
and cleaning the whipped cream from the dish with your finger;
in fact, some people at full tables will wish they were where you were.

Go to the movies
where it is dark and soothing
alone in your seat amidst a fleeting community.

And, then, take yourself out dancing,
to a club where no one knows you
stand on the outside of the floor
until the lights convince you more and more
and the music shows you.
Dance like no one's watching
('cause they are probably not)
and, if they are, assume it is with best and human intentions,
the way bodies move genuinely to beats is, after all, gorgeous and affecting.
Dance until you're sweating
and beads of perspiration remind you of life's best things,
down your back like a brook of blessings.

Go to the woods alone and the trees and squirrels will watch for you.
Go to an unfamiliar city, roam the streets,
there are always statues to talk to

and benches made for sitting
give strangers a shared existence
if only for a minute
and these moments can be so uplifting
and the conversations that you get in
by sitting alone on benches
might have never happened
had you not been there by yourself.

Society is afraid of alone though,
like lonely hearts are wasting away in basements,
like people must have problems if, after awhile, nobody is dating them

But alone is a freedom that breathes easy and weightless
and lonely is healing if you make it.

You could stand, swathed by groups and mobs or hold hands with your partner
look both further and farther
in the endless quest for company,
but no one's in your head
and by the time you translate your thoughts some essence of them may be lost
or perhaps it is just kept,
perhaps in the interest of loving oneself,
perhaps all of those sappy slogans
from preschool over
to high school's groaning
were tokens for holding the lonely at bay.
'cause if you're happy in your head then solitude is blessed and alone is okay.

It's okay if no one believes like you
all experiences unique, no one has the same synapses
can't think like you
for this be relieved,
keeps it interesting, life's magic things in reach.

And it doesn't mean you aren't connected, that community's not present.
Just take the perspective you get
from being one person alone in one head
and feel the effects of it

Take silence and respect it.
If you have an art that needs a practice, stop neglecting it.
If your family doesn't get you
or a religious sect is not meant for you
don't obsess about it.

You could be, in an instant, surrounded, if you need it.
If your heart is bleeding make the best of it

there is heat in freezing, be a testament

Se posso perdonare, allora devo
riuscire a perdonare anche me stessa

Tenersi all’apparenza, forse descrivere
soltanto cose in mutua tenerezza.

Women in labor, Mary Ruefle

Women who lie alone at midnight
because there is no one else to lie to

Women who lie alone at midnight
at noon in the laundromat
destroying their own socks

Women who lie alone at midnight:
Hans Brinker, or The Silver Skates

Women who lie alone at midnight
as the first furl of starlight
pearls the moon with nacre

Women who lie alone at midnight
sending a postcard bearing
the face of a bawling infant
who cries “I am for the new”

Women who lie alone at midnight
reciting the names of shoes

Women who lie alone at midnight
spurting unjustified tears,
the kind that run sideways
never reaching the mouth,
the kind you cannot swallow

Women who lie alone at midnight
singing breast away the burden of my tender
and afterwards burp

Women who lie alone at midnight
obeying the laws of physics
Women who let their dreams curl at the end
Women in a monastery of flamingos

Women who die alone at midnight
contributing to the end, to
lost time, to the rain and flies,
seeing the bird they saw trapped in the airport
surviving by the water fountain

What’s more, try it sometime

It works

volenterosa correvo a cercarti. Veramente non sapevo
chi ti voleva. Per esempio giocare dolcemente piangendo
sudando.

dove andavamo insieme ai grandi;
la rosa di mia madre è testimonianza
sera che si scioglie tra le dita.

[Gisella Genna]

Sono nata il ventuno a primavera
ma non sapevo che nascere folle,
aprire le zolle
potesse scatenar tempesta.
Così Proserpina lieve
vede piovere sulle erbe,
sui grossi frumenti gentili
e piange sempre la sera.
Forse è la sua preghiera.

Io vorrei, superato ogni tremore, Alda Merini

a mia madrae

Io vorrei, superato ogni tremore,
giungere alla bellezza che mi incalza,
dalla rovina del silenzio, fonda,
togliere la misura della voce
e cantare all'unisono coi suoni;
stamparmi nelle palme ogni vigore
in crescita perenne e modulare
un attento confine con le cose
ov'io possa con esse colloquiare
difesa sempre da incipienti caos.
Vorrei abitare nel segreto cuore
centro d'ogni più puro movimento,
animare di me gli spenti aspetti
dei fantasmi reali e riplasmare
le parabole ardenti ove ogni grazia
è tocca dal suo limite. Variata
stupendamente da codesti incontri
numererò la plurima mia essenza
entro un solo, perenne,
insistere di toni adolescenti.
Nell'aperta misura delle ali
del più libero uccello,
nel vigore degli alberi
nella chiarezza-musica dei venti,
nel frastuono puerile dei colori,
nell'aroma del frutto,
sarò creatura in unico e diverso
principio, senza origine né segno
d'ancestrale condanna.

Mirror, Sylvia Plath

I am silver and exact. I have no preconceptions.
Whatever I see I swallow immediately
Just as it is, unmisted by love or dislike.
I am not cruel, just truthful -
The eye of a little god, four cournered.
Most of the time I meditate on the opposite wall.
It is pink, with speckles. I have looked at it so long
I think it is a part of my heart. But it flickers.
Faces and darkness separate us over and over.

Now I am a lake. A woman bends over me,
Searching my reaches for what she really is.
Then she turns to those liars, the candles or the moon.
I see her back, and reflect it faithfully.
She rewards me with tears and an agitation of hands
I am important to her. She comes and goes.
Each morning it is her face that replaces the darkness.
In me she has drowned a young girl, and in me an old woman
Rises toward her day after day, like a terrible fish.

Ode II

Demora-te sobre a minha hora.
Antes de me tomar, demora.
Que tu  me percorras cuidadosa, etérea
Que eu te conheça lícita, terrena

Duas fortes mulheres
Na sua dura hora.

Que me tomes sem pena
Mas voluptuosa, eterna
Como as fêmeas da Terra.

E a ti, te conhecendo
Que eu me faça carne
E posse
Como fazem os homens.

"Ho parlato in sogno con te, Afrodite."

"Vorrei veramente essere morta.
Essa lasciandomi piangendo forte,

mi disse: 'Quanto ci è dato soffrire,
o Saffo: contro mia voglia
io devo abbandonarti.'

'Allontanati felice' risposi
'ma ricorda che fui di te
sempre amorosa.

Ma se tu dimenticherai
(e tu dimentichi!) io voglio ricordare
i nostri celesti patimenti:

le molte ghirlande di viole e rose
che a me vicina, sul grembo
intrecciasti col timo;

i vezzi di leggiadre corolle
che mi chiudesti intorno
al delicato collo;

e l'olio da re, forte di fiori,
che la tua mano lisciava
sulla lucida pelle;

e i molli letti
dove alle tenere fanciulle joniche
nasceva amore della tua bellezza."

On empathy

what it sounds like is a bird breaking small bones against glass. the least of them, a sparrow, of course. you’re about to serve dinner and this is the scene. blame the bird, the impertinent windows, try not to think of the inconvenience of blood splattering violet in the dusk. how can you eat after this? do not think of whom to blame when the least of us hurdles into the next moment. a pane opening into another. the least of us spoiling your meal.

~

the smell of it will be smoke and rank. you will mutter about this for days, the injustice of splatter on your window. foolish bird. civilization. house with the view. fucking bird feeder. it will take you a week, while the flesh starts to rot under thinning feathers, while the blood has congealed and stuck, for you to realize that no one is coming to take the body. it is your dead bird. it is your glass. you have options you think. hire out. move out. leave it for the bigger blacker birds.

~

you will taste rotting just above the top of your tongue. so much, that you check yourself to make sure that it is not you. the bird deserves something. you go to the closet, pick out a shoe box. discount? designer? you start to think of how it has come to this: pondering your mortality through a bird. a dead bird. never-mind. you don’t find it a problem not running into windows.

~

it is an eyesore and we start to gather as large billows in your yard. you marvel at us, beautiful, collecting and loosening our dark bodies from white sky to your grass. and then it comes. more bones and blood. one by one crashing into the closed pane. mindless birds. brown and gray feathers. filthy pests. another. fucking feeder. we look like billions lifting into flight and then—shatter.

~

you might find a delicate humility in the art of cleaning glass. while you work, you sustain tiny slivers of opened flesh. tips of your fingers sing. shards, carnage, it has become too much. you are careful to pick up all that you can see. you call a repairman. you are careful to pick up all that you can see. you throw everything into big shiny trash bags. you are careful to pick up all that you can see. you consider french doors. you are careful to pick up all that you can see and find more with each barefoot trip through your bloodbath house.

 a mulher
é algo de misterioso
que está entre o canto
e a metáfora"

[Alda Merini]

Amor Violeta

O amor me fere é debaixo do braço,
Macero ele,

o campeonato pernambucano
a construção do prédio

A Divisão do Frango (Ossos, plasticina, 2017)

Alguns ficaram com as minhas partes
piores.
Parece-me justo e valioso. Parece-me informação

sermos nós ainda a criança generosa.

Ainda me telefonam.

Apenas pelos meus irmãos soube dividir-me.
Apenas eles ficaram para lá da refeição.

Não quero com isto justificar-me. Entendo.
